Why Can’t College Football Players Hold Onto The Ball Before Crossing The Goal Line?

droppedball

This is something that blows my mind every single time it happens. For some reason my brain cannot process how these players who have a breakaway touchdown with nobody near them just drop the ball right before crossing the goal line.

It happened twice yesterday. TWICE! And it’s happened countless other times before this season. Desean Jackson most famously did it in the NFL, and a Broncos player did it last week. But in college I feel like it’s happening more and more and I can’t wrap my head around it.

Here’s Joe Mixon who returned a crucial kick back that put Oklahoma right back in the mix with Ohio State in the first quarter, but dropped the ball. Luckily for OU the refs missed it, which I’m not sure how, but that’s a story for a different day.

And then later last night, or more like this morning on the east coast, Vic Enwere from Cal did the same thing in an even more crucial spot.

That was to seal the game. The refs screwed this one up to and gave the ball to Cal at the 1 yard line who took a knee and ran out the clock.

It just seems so simple. I guess I would never understand because my white boy athleticism would never put me in a position for it to happen. So all I can say is: HOLD ONTO THE BALL.
