Hue Jackson thinks size matters. That’s the headline today from the Cleveland Plain Dealer for a story on Jared Goff’s chances of being drafted #2 overall by the quarterback killer franchise. Hue’s coaching career is banking on the next QB of the Browns to keep around the head coaching game so it should be obvious why Hue NEEDS this pick to be a slam dunk.
The bad news for Jared Goff: his hands measured 9 inches at the Combine.
The good news for Carson Wentz: he has 10 inch hands.
That’s not ideal and Hue is on record saying you need big hands to survive the elements playing in AFC North cities, especially in December.
Hue Jackson: Likes QBs with big hands. Paxton Lynch has huge mitts, 11.5 inches reportedly.

And now Hue’s own words about size mattering:
“Oh yes it does,” Jackson said at his podium appearance here. “It does. It matters because we play in a division where all of a sudden there’s rain, there’s snow and it’s different. I think guys that have big hands can grip the ball better in those environmental situations and so we’ll look for a guy that fits what we’re looking for in a quarterback and is hand size important? Yes it is. ”
Of course you want to see hand size for guys who’ve played the position.
Starting (and former) NFL QB Hand Sizes (via Rotoworld):
Drew Brees (10.25 inches)
Russell Wilson(10.25 inches)
Paxton Lynch (11.5 inches)
Brett Favre (10.38 inches)
Michael Vick (historically small 8.5-inch hands)
Colin Kaepernick (9.13 inches)
Cam Newton (9 7/8)
Andy Dalton (9 1/2 inches)
Robert Griffin III (9.5 inches)
Joe Flacco (9.63 inches)
Daunte Culpepper (9.5 inches)
Tom Brady (“enormous hand,” according to NFL guy Scott Pioli)
Aaron Rodgers (9.38 inches)
Teddy Bridgewater (9 1/4)
Tony Romo (8.86 inches)
AJ McCarron (10 inches)
Cardale Jones (9 3/4)
Derek Carr (9 1/8)
Ryan Tannehill (9 inches)
Johnny Manziel (9 7/8)
Then we have the Browns new analytics wizard Sashi Brown saying this to the assembled media about Goff:
“I don’t think it will be a problem for Jared, but it’s something you look at.”
Meanwhile, Tom Brady is the active NFL leader in fumbles with “enormous hand(s).” You think weather had anything to do with this? Looks like Jared Goff is out in Cleveland. Next guy step up.
Seems like Paxton Lynch’s agent was floating the massive hands rumor. Here’s the official measurement by NFL officials.
