Buffalo Sabres center Zemgus Girgensons had a rough Sunday in Edmonton where he took at puck to the face in a 4-2 loss to the Oilers as his team got one loss closer to the worst record in the NHL. It took 12 stitches to close up that simple puck to the face wound, according to the Buffalo News.
Did that stop Zemgus from playing Monday night in Vancouver? Not at all. And the Sabres took another L, a 5-2 blowout.
How bad has the first half of 2015 been for the Buffalo fan favorite? He had to publicly ask fans to not vote for him on all-star ballots. He had to literally tell the entire nation of Latvia, his homeland, to stop with the votes because he didn’t deserve to be on the team.
“All due respect to fans, it’s just something that you have to deserve,” Girgensons said Thursday in First Niagara Center. “How it went last year, I don’t want to repeat that. It’s a lot of pressure on me and something that’s not earned right now.
“It was mixed emotions, different emotions,” he said. “It’s not something I got too much satisfaction out of and something I don’t want to repeat this year.”
And now his face has been wrecked by a puck.
