Cubs vs. Pirates: Score, Game Stats & Live Updates

Final- Cubs 4, Pirates 0

Arrieta throws a complete game as the Cubs advance to the National League Division Series. Dexter Fowler and Kyle Schwarber each hit home runs and Arrieta continues his second half domination in shutting out Pittsburgh on the road. The Cubs move on to play the St. Louis Cardinals in a best-of-5 series that begins Friday night in St. Louis.
Mid 9th– Addison Russell tries to stretch a single into a double and gets gunned down by Marte in left field. Pirates with their final shot and Jake Arrieta will look for the complete game for the Cubs.
End 8th– Arrieta gets through another inning and it is down to the final three outs for the Pirates as the Cubs look to win their first playoff game in 12 years. Arrieta has 11 strikeouts now through eight innings.
Mid 8th– Cubs get leadoff walk but three strikeouts by Joakim Soria ends any threat. Time is running out for the Pirates to score.
End 7th– Another double play to end a Pittsburgh threat. Arrieta looks very shaky on the mound however for the Cubs. He has taken them through seven and now a big decision for Joe Maddon. Cubs continue with their 4-0 lead in the 8th inning.
Mid 7th– Arrieta steals second base after getting hit but doesn’t score as he goes back to the mound with 74 pitches thrown in this game so far. Needs to make sure he doesn’t hit anyone else now as he will get ejected.
Top 7th– Benches clear as Tony Watson hits Arrieta with a pitch after Arrieta has hit two Pirates hitters earlier on. Pittsburgh showing their frustation.
End 6th– Arrieta gets Starling Marte to hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded to keep the Cubs on top 4-0 going to the late innings. Cubs fans exhale while Pirates fans wonder if that will be the best chance all night.
Bottom 6th– Pirates get leadoff hitter for first time all night and crowd at PNC Park has chance to cheer as Arrieta seems to be struggling to a point as he hits Josh Harrison to put two on for first time.
End 5th– Arrieta gets key call off the plate to strike out Alvarez or Pirates would have had 2 on with 2 out. A big break for Cubs and a terrible break for the Pirates as they try to rally. Arrieta barely at 60 pitches so far and the night is over for Gerrit Cole as Pittsburgh tries to keep the Cubs at bay.
Mid 5th– There must be questions right now in the Pittsburgh dugout on how to get back in this game against Jake Arrieta. It may only be the middle of the game but it is a four-run hole that the Pirates are in.
Top 5th: Cubs 4, Pirates 0– Fowler goes deep and is now 3-for-3 for the game as Chicago fans celebrate another home run off Cole and increase the cushion in the middle innings.
Mid 4th– Cole is starting to get up there in pitches and Pittsburgh needs to decide whether or not they are going to keep their ace in there for the long haul knowing Fowler and Schwarber will come up again in the 5th inning or not.
End 3rd– Arrieta with six strikeouts through three innings as Pirates go to Pedro Alvarez off the bench to help their offense get on track. So far, Arrieta looks very hard to beat.
Mid 3rd– Schwarber is 2-for-2 with a RBI single and two-run homer for all three Cubs RBIs in the game. He is quickly proving why the Cubs were so eager to bring him up.
Top 3rd- Cubs 3, Pirates 0: Schwarber takes Cole very deep to right field for a two-run home run to score Fowler and himself. A shot out of the stadium easily and the Cubs are sitting pretty with a three-run lead and Arrieta on the mound. The Pirates have to be sweating a bit and the Pirates bullpen is already starting up.
End 2nd: Cole and Arrieta retire the side in order and appear to be settling in as the 3rd inning arrives at PNC Park. The idea of a low-scoring game looks very real as both pitchers are getting ahead of hitters and dominating.
End 1st: Arrieta gets around an Andrew McCutchen single and it remains 1-0 Cubs as we move to the 2nd inning.
Mid 1st: Cole gets a key double play off the bat of Kris Bryant when he really needed it and limits the damage in the opening inning against a young Cubs team and their ace Jake Arrieta. Pirates will need to find a way to put up 2 now against a pitcher who has given up just two home runs in the second half of the season.
Top 1st- Cubs 1, Pirates 0: Chicago starts fast with Dexter Fowler single followed by a steal of second before Kyle Schwarber loops a single down the left-field line to start the game which scores Fowler.

The Cubs and Pirates have announced their lineups for Wednesday night’s National League Wild Card Game with some interesting decisions being made by both managers. Cubs manager Joe Maddon has put Kyle Schwarber in right field where he has played very little this season and has Kris Bryant in left field to allow Tommy LaStella to play third base. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has benched Pedro Alvarez in favor of Sean Rodriguez to play first base. A low-scoring game is in the works on a night with a light breeze blowing out to right field. Here are the lineups.
Cubs: CF Fowler, RF Schwarber, LF Bryant, 1B Rizzo, 3B La Stella, 2B Castro, C Montero, SS Russell, P Arrieta
Pirates: RF Polanco, 3B Harrison, CF McCutchen, LF Marte, C Cervelli, 2B Walker, SS Mercer, 1B Rodriguez, P Cole
