Cesar Hernandez Drew a Five-Ball Walk

The Mets and Phillies are barely through three innings, but Jacob deGrom is already out of the game after his worst start of the year. Yes, big hair lasted just 2 2/3 innings after allowing seven runs (and three home runs).
However, it’s not the dingers in a hitter’s yard that have us intrigued, but Cesar Hernandez’s first inning walk. Looking at the box score alone it looks like any other free base, but as you can see above, Hernandez actually took five pitches outside of the strike zone before taking his base.

Fortunately, everyone got their heads out of the clouds for Hernandez’s second at-bat, when he drew a normal, four-ball walk against deGrom.
