When did the participation medal era start in the United States?
We now know it started in Indianapolis around 1995 when the Colts hung an AFC “Finalist” banner for losing to the Steelers. I had no idea. I just figured that the new 2014 banner that’s now hanging from Lucas Oil was some sort of joke and that it was hung to spoof the NFL and deflated footballs.
It’s no joke.
@bustedcoverage it's not the only one they did. 1995 and 2003 pic.twitter.com/rSJNOvxEF8

Maybe it’s an Indiana thing. This is from Marion High School. It’s understandable for a high school to brag about being in the state championship considering how the old Indiana tournament worked. It’s another for some NFL team to brag about losing in the AFC championship game.
Everybody gets a medal!
