Johnny Manziel has done everything off the field over the last few months that you’d want from your starting quarterback. He made himself a better person by entering rehab and getting help for whatever issues he was having. He cleared his life and took a break from the 2 1/2 year world tour that he had been on. It’s time to forgive Manziel for throwing away his rookie season with off the field issues and actions that led the Browns to publicly call him out.
It’s time for Johnny Manziel to be named the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback, which would allow this franchise to get itself on track.
Here’s a statement from Johnny that should shut the door on the past few months:
“I would like to thank my family, friends, the Browns organization, my teammates, and Browns fans everywhere, for your patience, understanding, and support during my stay at Caron. The doctors and staff have been amazing and what I’ve learned in the last couple of months has been tremendous. I owe private apologies to a lot of people that I disappointed but a very public one to the Browns organization and the fans that I let down. I take full responsibility for my actions and it’s my intention to work very hard to regain everyone’s trust and respect. I understand that will take time and will only happen through what I do and not what I say. I also understand there’s a lot of curiosity about this but anyone who has a friend or family-member that’s been through things like this knows it’s an ongoing process. I’m going to continue to ask folks to try to respect my privacy as I determine to what degree I am comfortable talking about a subject which I consider very personal. Most of you have been considerate about that and I thank you for it. I look forward to seeing my teammates next week and focusing on football and my desire to be the best possible player, teammate, and man that I can be.”
That’s all that needs to be said. Now it’s time to get back to work as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. The guy has been out of rehab for the last week or so and has been living as a normal guy in his early 20s, minus the party scene. He went to Rangers and Mavs games. He drank water at the baseball game. He went with his girlfriend, who seems to be a calming influence on a guy who needs some stability. He didn’t go to Vegas as soon as he got out of rehab. He didn’t show up at some Drake concert. He went to the Dallas area where he can be around family.
It’s time to bury the hatchet with the old Johnny Manziel. I’ve forgiven him. It’s time for the Browns organization to end all this speculation about trading up for Marcus Mariota. You already have your starting quarterback. Johnny is back and has a clear head. It’s about time the organization has some patience and develops a guy over a number of years. Let him start 16 games and then see where the team stands.
