Hey, did you hear that times are tough in the newspaper world? If you have the chance to leave a newspaper for say ESPN, you leave the newspaper. Actually, you pack before you even tell the newspaper you’re leaving. You order a moving van, pack your shit and then go to the office to tell them you quit.
Let’s go to the Denver Post where ESPN has been doing some hiring.
From Romenesko:
A Denver Post photojournalist is so upset about assistant managing editor/photo-multimedia Tim Rasmussen leaving the paper to become digital photo editor at the nation’s largest sports media outlet that he presented the boss with a “FUCK ESPN” goodbye cake.
It was given with love by [Post photojournalist] RJ Sangosti, who was extremely upset by my leaving. I had said in our staff meeting, I did not want cake in the newsroom, I’ve seen way too many cakes in the newsroom over the past 15 years, so this cake was in my office the next morning.”
If you’re going to send your buddy off to that promised land job, you might as well make a major play. I like this from @RJSangosti. Editorialize on a cake. Never been to a newspaper cake ceremony? It’s one of the saddest moments you’ll ever see.
Happy trails to Tim. Enjoy knowing you won’t be losing your job so a newspaper company can make its quarterly number.
