The big drama this week in professional darts is how Peter Wright, the Guy Fieri-looking dude who paints his ‘hawk, went after his opponent, Michael Van Gerwen, in a post-match interview. This Wright dude is like the Richard Sherman of darts. Or the Hulk Hogan of darts. You get the idea. His job is to entertain and pester the guys like Van Gerwen, the world’s #1 darts player, with taunts and interviews where he calls MVG a “big baby.”
I wasn’t into darts until last night when I saw photos cross my Getty feed where Wright (@snakebitewright) is celebrating in MVG’s face. Now I’m hooked. Not that I have any idea what’s going on.
The hair and colorful costumes from Peter, 44, are not new, according to the British media. The Daily Mail reported in 2012 that his wife, a hairdresser, is responsible for the cuts and color. You might also notice a snake on the left side of his head, which fits with his nickname, ‘Snakebite.’
I’m still trying to get caught up on all the controversy that Wright has caused over the years. It seems like this beef with MVG is just starting to get good, so now’s the time to get on the darts bandwagon. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for now that basketball is only worth my time for 4-5 weeks out of the year. I need a sport that reminds me of college football during the offseason. Take a look at the crowds at these dart matches. It looks like going to Ole Miss for a tailgate, mixed in with some Bama rednecks.
