When Floyd Mayweather walks to the ring with his entourage of Team Money goons and Justin Bieber, it wouldn’t be a shocker to see former Kentucky star Daniel Orton with him.
The Purefoods Hotshots of the Philippine Basketball Association canned Orton this month after dissing boxer Manny Pacquiao’s nonexistent basketball skills. According to the AFP, it was this hot take that got Orton in the hot seat:
“Professional boxer, yeah, okay… professional basketball player, no. It’s a joke.”
Hotshots administrator Rene Pardo confirmed Orton was released because of his comments, and even dropped a Martin Luther King Jr. comparison:
“Everyone is angry at him… it is like he went to the United States and insulted the name of Martin Luther King.”
The report goes on to state that the Philippines Basketball Association fined Orton fined $5,650 for his “unwarranted antics.”
As a Filipino, this doesn’t really shock me at all—Filipinos are freaking insane when it comes to Pacquiao, even in the states. I’ve said way worse about the guy to some friends and every time they look at me like I just told them I’m best buds with Satan. The MLK comp is ridiculous, but for whatever reason, that’s the way it is over there.
Somehow, Orton was cool about the whole thing on Twitter:
For a fun activity, take a quick look at a Pacquiao basketball highlight mix, and try to say something positive:
