Oregon, Ohio finally has a new name for the week until the national championship. The city will now be called “Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters.”
The name is a play on the city motto, “Oregon on the Bay, City of Opportunity.”
Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters is a suburb of Toledo and has land on the shores of Lake Erie. According to the Toledo Blade, city officials refrained from ditching “Oregon” all together, citing pride in the city’s heritage, which dates back to the fur trade and the former Oregon Territory, not the football team.
Maybe city officials don’t understand how this all works to a viral world. You pick a simple city name like Buckeye, Ohio and sell a ton of shirts, appear on ESPN, hang temporary “Buckeye, Ohio” signs over your “Welcome to Oregon, Ohio” signs and have fun with things this week. You use this week as free promotion that comes along like never for random Ohio cities.
Instead, city officials chose something that won’t go nuts on ESPN and will be laughed at around the country. Smart move, Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters. Such a good decision.
The biggest PR the city has had recently occurred back in August when a trailer full of potato salad caught fire at the local German-American festival.
