Pirates Catcher Tony Sanchez Really, Really Likes Competition For His Job

On Thursday, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported that the New York Yankees traded pitch-framer extraordinaire Francisco Cervelli to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Suffice to say, this was a much-needed move for the Pirates who are likely to lose Russell Martin in free agency. However, lost amidst this catcher shuffling for the Pirates is Tony Sanchez—a 26-year-old former top prospect still in their system.

Despite his early career hype, Sanchez had to bide his time in the minors, logging two-plus seasons in AAA-Indianapolis before getting a small taste of the big leagues in 2013 and 2014.

But as you can see from the graphic below, Sanchez has been super professional about the Pirates acquiring other catchers in past offseasons. He’s literally like a girl who doesn’t get a rose on “The Bachelorette,” but is totally cool with it.
