Evander Kane is named after Evander Holyfield, according to the Pittsburgh Penguins TV guys so if you’re Simon Despres and you’re going to fight the guy, you might as well do it without a helmet. Of course that’s a no-no in the new NHL where fighting leads to concussions, which leads to lawsuits. That’s what makes what happened last night in Winnipeg so interesting. Take off your helmet before a fight and you’re getting a two-minute minor along with the five-minute major for the fight.
Yes, there will be some (like a guy named after Holyfield) who won’t stop and think about two minutes when some other tough guy wants to go.
The good news for Despres is that he remained standing after taking the right to the head (notice the hair catching some breeze) and didn’t land head first into the ice. It seems nobody got seriously hurt, there might be a concussion and probably a lawsuit. All in all, just another night in the NHL.
