Review: SodaStream Home Beverage Maker (NOTE: Beer not available)

What?
Sodastream
What the hell is it?
Sodastream is a home beverage maker that allows you to turn water into sodas and other carbonated beverages through a simple 3-step process: (1) fill the container with water, (2) shoot bubbles into it, (3) add flavor and shake gently (and I mean gently…it’s carbonated). You can choose from over 60 different flavors, many just like your favorite store-bought versions. Unfortunately, beer is not one of them.
Yeah, but do I really need it?
Maybe. It’s kinda cool. My kids like it (“Dad, let’s make more pop!”). Plus, Sodastream beverages have less sugar than store-bought sodas, cost less per serving (over time), and help save the planet. Do you need it? Well I know guys who don’t need to make their own beer, but they do anyway because it’s fun (or because they’re hipsters — See “IPA”). So if you’re a DIY type, you might like it. Honestly, I’m lazy and drink beer, so mine will probably be used mostly by the kids.
Will chicks dig it?
On one hand it might be a little weird that you make your own soda. On the other hand, she might be impressed if you have her over for a date and say, “can I make you a drink?” and then return with a fresh pink bubbly beverage on ice that you just made (I recommend you give her the diet pink grapefruit; she’ll like the flavor and appearance). With vodka.
Easy to use?
Yep. Put the carbonation tube in the device, fill the container with water, shoot bubbles into it, add flavor and stir. Importantly, stir gently – or else your soda will end up on the walls and ceiling (NOTE TO SODASTREAM: add instructions for how to avoid carbonation explosions).
Conclusion.
Kind of fun. It may revolutionize the “soda experience” (that sounds weird) like Keurig did for coffee. But until beer becomes an option, my kids will probably use it more than I will.
