Ohio Softball Pitcher Wins State Semi Game, Shoplifts Kohl's In Same Day…Allegedly

Update: Alvelo was held out of today’s D-3 Ohio state title game because of the shoplifting incident. Her team lost 4-0.

Imagine for a second that you just pitched your Ohio high school softball team to the D-3 state championship game and you’re the state’s all-time leader in wins and strikeouts who has been rewarded with a softball scholarship to the University of Washington.
How would you celebrate? Taran Alvelo, who also has 37 career home runs — just eight away from the Ohio state record, had an interesting Thursday night.
From the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette:

According to the Lancaster police report, a loss prevention associate with Kohl’s, 1355 Ety Pointe Drive, Lancaster, spotted a suspicious woman at 6:50 p.m. Thursday while watching video surveillance.
Alvelo is alleged to have selected and then concealed a pair of Converse men’s tennis shoes valued at $50; three rings valued at $48; a necklace valued at $20; and a pair of earrings valued at $10, according to the report. She then went into a dressing room.
She was followed and stopped by security “after she passed all points of sales without paying for the merchandise,” according to the report.
The items were found in the purse she was carrying, according to the report.

WOAH! THAT’S AN IMPRESSIVE CELEBRATION — ALLEGEDLY.
She risked a massive scholarship (probably in the six figure range) for $128 in swag? That seems really, really odd. Her family couldn’t just come up with a little money to buy a few things from Kohl’s? Something doesn’t add up here.
I better do a Google search for this family real fast.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!

Taran was scheduled to pitch in the state final on Saturday. A year ago she lost a 14-inning heartbreaker in the state final after striking out a state record 24 hitters.
This is all too odd.
