Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean and veteran right tackle Lane Johnson won’t play Sunday against the Bills in Buffalo.
Dean’s hamstring injury from the Commanders game last week will keep him sidelined at a crucial time. He’s been a key piece in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme since returning to the lineup in Week 8 after recovering from a torn patellar tendon. The numbers tell the story – Philly’s run defense jumped from 24th to 10th in success rate (from 50% to 59.7%) with Dean anchoring the middle.
The Eagles will turn to Jihaad Campbell in Dean’s spot.
Campbell, the team’s first-round selection out of Alabama, has already started eight games in his rookie campaign. He’s been productive when called upon, racking up 63 tackles while adding an interception and a forced fumble to his resume.
The timing couldn’t be more challenging for Philadelphia’s defense. They’re facing Buffalo’s ground attack that’s currently leading the NFL at 158.9 yards per game – a true test for the Eagles’ front seven without Dean patrolling the middle.
On the offensive side, Lane Johnson remains out with the Lisfranc injury he suffered against Detroit in Week 11. The six-time Pro Bowl tackle’s absence continues to be felt along the offensive line. Fred Johnson, a seven-year NFL veteran, will make another start at right tackle as the Eagles try to protect Jalen Hurts against a tough Bills defense.
