Developing Bo Nix as the quarterback is super important for Sean Payton this season. Nix is a rookie, and he needs lots of help from the older players on the Denver Broncos team.
He can’t do it alone.
Nix especially needs his offensive teammates to support him well. He’s not going to be a superstar right away, but with time and help, he can become a good player. “He has the potential, but veterans need to step up,” said Coach Payton.
The defense also has to play better if the Broncos want to make it to the playoffs. Patrick Surtain leads a strong secondary, but they need more help from their pass rushers. The first veteran who must improve is Zach Allen.
Zach Allen was signed by the Broncos for a big deal: three years for $45,750,000. Last season, he got seven sacks as their main edge rusher. Not bad considering how tough the season was for Denver.
Allen’s performance could get even better if the team builds more leads next year. This would give him more chances to go after quarterbacks. But he can’t just rely on getting more opportunities; he needs to be more efficient too.
Allen’s technique and relentless effort are his strengths. He might not be super athletic, but he never gives up on a play. This makes him likely to get a few sacks just by sheer determination.
One thing people often overlook about Allen is his ability to stop the run. It’s not as flashy as getting sacks, but it’s crucial for Denver’s defense. If he keeps stopping the run well, it will help his team build leads.
Moving on, Mike McGlinchey is another key player for Denver this season. Right tackles are getting more attention these days, which is why Denver spent big money on McGlinchey.
McGlinchey’s 2023 season had ups and downs; he gave up six sacks and earned an average PFF grade of 67.5. For Nix to succeed, McGlinchey needs to play better and protect him from edge rushers.
McGlinchey’s role in the running game is also vital. He has the size to block defenders effectively but lacks some mobility. Any missed blocks can disrupt Denver’s offense and put them in tough situations.
Javonte Williams is another player who needs to step up in 2024. A strong running back can really help a rookie quarterback like Nix. Williams rushed for over 700 yards last year but wasn’t very efficient.
Denver needs Williams to keep their offense moving smoothly and make big plays when needed. Last year, defenses often stacked against him, limiting his effectiveness.
Williams averaged only 3.6 yards per carry last season which isn’t good enough for Denver’s offense to thrive. If he doesn’t improve his performance, he might find himself benched more often.
The Broncos drafted Audric Estime in the fifth round as an insurance policy in case Williams struggles again this season. They haven’t given up on Williams yet but are prepared to make changes if needed.
Williams has more explosive potential than Estime though so Denver hopes he’ll take charge of the starting job soon enough—becoming an efficient runner would greatly benefit Nix and the entire offense.
