Sean Payton is staying in Denver, and the Broncos are making it official. The team has signed Payton to a new five-year extension, per ESPN, keeping the 62-year-old head coach locked in through the 2030 NFL season.
Financial terms weren’t immediately available.
It’s hard to argue with the decision. Payton has gone 32-19 across three seasons with the Broncos, taking the team as far as the AFC Championship Game. When he arrived in 2023, he was inheriting a franchise stuck in a seven-year playoff drought. That turnaround didn’t happen overnight – but it happened faster than most expected.
His first year wasn’t perfect. The 2023 Broncos pushed for a postseason spot with Russell Wilson at quarterback but fell short, finishing 8-9. What followed that offseason, though, changed everything.
Payton made one call that defined his tenure in Denver.
Wilson was out. Rookie Bo Nix was in. It was a bold move at the time, and Nix has done enough in his first two seasons to justify it – showing real growth as a starter while the defense carried much of the load. Denver has gone 24-10 over the past two seasons, and the offense has steadily grown around Nix.
Last postseason is where things get painful. A serious ankle injury took Nix out of the divisional round, and without him, Denver couldn’t generate enough offense in the AFC Championship – losing 10-7 to the New England Patriots. It’s the kind of “what if” that stings, because the Broncos had looked like a genuine Super Bowl contender up to that point.
With Nix healthy and looking ahead to 2026, the Broncos didn’t sit still. They traded for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, adding another weapon to the offense. Waddle flashed real star potential early in his career, though a declining situation in Miami seemed to limit what he could do. Payton clearly believes a change of scenery is all Waddle needs.
It wouldn’t be the first time Payton has built something special. Before Denver, he spent 15 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, compiling a 152-89 record, making 11 playoff appearances, and winning a Super Bowl in his fourth year as head coach. That last detail is worth paying attention to – because this coming season will be Payton’s fourth year in Denver.
If history repeats itself, the Broncos made the right call locking him in now. A Super Bowl run next season would only drive his price up.
