NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo Beginning Treatment For Brain Tumor

NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. The NBA announced the news on Saturday afternoon on behalf of the Hall of Famer and his family.

Mutombo is said to be in “great spirits” and is beginning his treatment in Atlanta.

“NBA Global Ambassador and Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. He is receiving the best care possible from a collaborative team of specialists in Atlanta and is in great spirits as he begins treatment,” the NBA said in a statement.

“Dikembe and his family ask for privacy during this time so they can focus on his care They are grateful for your prayers and good wishes.”

The 56-year-old Mutombo ranks second in NBA in history for career blocks and played 18 seasons for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets.

After the news surfaced, a number of people in the basketball community expressed their good wishes for Mutombo, including the Hawks.

“We know he will approach this challenge with the same determination and grit that have made him a legend on and off the court,” Atlanta Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler said.

Along with being one of the best rebounders in league history, Mutombo was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year four times, was a three-time All-NBA selection, and received 8 all-star nods.
