A scary situation unfolded in the first half of Tuesday’s game between USC and Gonzaga in the Elite Eight of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
As USC was bringing the ball down the court, referee Burt Smith collapsed and was unresponsive.
Smith was laying on his back when medical personnel quickly ran onto the court to give assistance. Smith was able to get to his feet on his own, but was placed on the stretcher for precautionary reasons.
The good news is he appeared to be alert as he was placed on the stretcher.

During an on-air update, it was reported that Smith was alert in the locker room and stable but undergoing additional evaluations.
