If you’ve been paying attention to the Mets at all, this news shouldn’t surprise. Tebow has been dreadful at the plate, going 1-18 with 11 strikeouts. He also dealt with an ankle issue after stepping on a sprinkler head — he cited the injury as a reason for his poor performance (via MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo):
“It’s not like it’s a shock,” Tebow said, laughing. “They’ve been super honest the whole time. We’ve had great relationships and conversations, so it’s not like I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ So it’s all good.”
…
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t do as much as I wanted to with my ankle, which is kind of disappointing,” said Tebow, who batted .226 with eight home runs last year in his first Minor League season. “But I got to put in a lot of good work, and feel like I’m improving. So that’s good.”
You might remember there were reports Tebow could start the season in Double-A with a solid spring training showing. Slashing .056/.105/.161 likely killed those dreams, but who knows?
