Bill Belichick Responds to Pro Football Hall of Fame Snub in Typical Fashion

Bill Belichick has had one of the greatest coaching careers in NFL history. Six Super Bowls. More playoff wins than anyone who’s ever coached the game. Third all-time in regular-season victories. And yet, when the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first ballot came around, his name wasn’t in it.

You probably heard about that.

When asked about the snub during an appearance on the Hang Out with Sean Hannity podcast – dropping Tuesday – Belichick responded in the most Belichick way imaginable.

“Out of my control.”

Typical. He then pivoted almost immediately to North Carolina, making it clear that coaching the Tar Heels is where his head’s at right now, not chasing a bust in Canton.

The Support That Followed

That said, Belichick did acknowledge being moved by the reaction to the Hall of Fame’s decision. He said it meant something to see people outside of football rally behind him – and the list of supporters was a wide one. Current and former NFL players spoke up, sure, but so did President Donald Trump and LeBron James. Not exactly your typical football crowd.

Early reports had painted Belichick as “puzzled” and “disappointed” by being passed over. He hasn’t said much publicly to confirm or deny that – which, again, is very on-brand for the man.

Belichick on Tom Brady

Belichick was also asked about his relationship with Tom Brady, and he had nothing but good things to say. That’s not entirely out of nowhere. The two seemed to have a rough patch around the time Brady left New England, but they’ve clearly moved past it. They’ve appeared together at a number of functions and have treated each other warmly at those events.

Brady was one of the loudest voices defending Belichick after the Hall of Fame decision, saying he simply didn’t “understand it.”

The CBS Interview Controversy

Then there’s the CBS interview – the one that’s taken on a life of its own. During that sit-down, Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson stepped in to shut down a question about how the two met. It reportedly happened more than once, though CBS edited out several of Hudson’s interruptions before it aired.

Belichick told Hannity he believes the whole thing was “done very deceptively.” He’s asked CBS for the full transcript of the interview. He hasn’t received it.

The full Hannity conversation drops Tuesday. It could deliver a few more newsworthy moments – though anyone who’s followed Belichick’s career knows he’s built a reputation on saying as little as possible. The teaser clips might end up being the highlight reel.
