Browns QB Solution: Why Cleveland Has Limited Options

The Cleveland Browns could find an unexpected path forward after a devastating 2023 season. Injuries to key players Deshaun Watson and Nick Chubb led to offensive collapse and just three wins — landing them the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Now, with star defensive end Myles Garrett requesting a trade, Cleveland has a chance to completely reshape their future.

Here’s where things get interesting. The Browns could trade Garrett to an NFC contender, likely securing a first-round pick in the mid-to-late 20s. They could then flip their No. 2 overall pick to the quarterback-hungry Las Vegas Raiders, who hold the sixth selection.

The real opportunity lies in free agency. Kirk Cousins, who may be released by the Atlanta Falcons, could sign with Cleveland on a deal similar to Russell Wilson’s recent contract. The Falcons would absorb most of his salary while pursuing Michael Penix Jr. as their future quarterback.

Cousins would be a perfect bridge quarterback in Cleveland.

The veteran signal-caller brings multiple advantages over Watson — better reliability, higher accuracy, and a more natural fit with head coach Kevin Stefanski’s system. Their history together in Minnesota, where Stefanski served as offensive coordinator, could prove invaluable. Cousins thrived in Stefanski’s run-heavy, play-action offense that created wider throwing lanes.

Trading Garrett and moving down from No. 2 would give Cleveland additional draft capital to build around Cousins in 2025. If he performs well, they’ve found their quarterback solution. If not, they’ll be well-positioned for the 2026 draft class.

His midwest roots — growing up in the region and playing at Michigan State — add another layer of fit. While his arm strength isn’t exceptional, Cousins remains one of the most accurate passers of his generation.

The Browns could emerge from their current struggles with a proven quarterback, additional draft picks, and a clearer path forward. For a franchise that’s seen more than its share of quarterback disappointments, signing Cousins represents a low-risk move with significant upside.
