Lionel Messi to MLS?

Less than 24 hours after the Argentina soccer star helped lift his team to a 2-0 win over Mexico in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar, reports surfaced that Messi is closing in on a deal to join Inter Miami next summer.

According to the report, Messi could join David Beckham’s club in the summer of 2023 after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of the European season.

The 35-year-old Messi would become the highest-paid player in league history.

The report adds Inter Miami is also looking to build around the Argentine star by recruiting two of his former Barcelona teammates, Luis Suarez and Cesc Fabregas.

It is not the first time that Messi has been linked to Inter Miami. Reports have been circulating for months that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was a top target of the club, and Messi regularly spends time in Miami with his family. Messi himself has said that he would like to play in the United States before ending his career.

“I would like to play in the United States one day; it’s always been one of my dreams,” he said last year.

If Messi does come to MLS, he would be a major draw for a league that is already growing in popularity. With a legend of his caliber joining the league, you could expect the attendance and attention for MLS to continue to rise.
