Apparently, we had some controversy surrounding German midfielder Mesut Özil heading into his opening World Cup game against Mexico this afternoon. Literally up until the final decision was made today before kickoff, there was a real chance he wasn’t going to start in this game after he took a photo with the Turkish president. Here are some details from The Economic Times:
Ozil’s start follows weeks of debate in Germany over his decision to pose for a photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan along with teammate Ilkay Gundogan. Some German politicians and media questioned whether the players, who are of Turkish heritage, were sufficiently committed to Germany.
Who says politics only dips into sports in America? The stick-to-sports crowd in Germany must be losing their minds. Good news, though, is that he made the start anyways. I don’t know too much about this guy, but I do know that he’s one of Germany’s best players, which is kind of important to have if they want to repeat as World Cup champs.
But I want to put that discussion aside and head off the pitch for a minute. Let’s introduce Mesut’s fiancee, Amine Gülşe. She was named Miss Turkey back in 2014 and starting dating Ozil in early-2017. They got engaged shortly after that. What do we know about her? Well, according to The Sun, she has “appeared on Turkish television series Asla Vazgecmem, does modeling in her spare time”. So basically, she’s your typical model/actress type.
