Ohio State has something that once seemed impossible.
According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, Ohio State University has successfully registered a trademark for the word “THE.”
The trademark applies to clothing, “namely t-shirts, baseball caps and hats; all of the foregoing being promoted, distributed, and sold through channels customary to the field of sports and collegiate athletics.”
The United States Patent and Trademark Office approved the trademark application on Tuesday, June 21, nearly three years since the application was initially filed.
The Ohio State University has successfully registered a trademark for "THE."
The registration was just issued on June 21st by the USPTO.
The application was filed back in August 2019. So why did it take 3 years to get approved?

There was initially a hangup because Ohio State was opposing clothing company Marc Jacobs application for “THE” which was placed several months earlier.
After agreeing to a settlement, the path was cleared for Ohio State to receive the trademark.
So, as silly as it may seem, it happened, and now you can expect to see “THE” Ohio State University aggressively pumping out gear that the Buckeyes faithful will be eating up.
