Canadian Mikayla Demaiter retired from hockey in April 2019 and went pro as an Instagram model. No joke. It’s 2020, this stuff happens these days. Mikayla, 20, even has an Elite Prospects page to prove “goalie” on her resume is no lie. “Dear Hockey, It is time to say goodbye. It is time to turn the page and move to the next chapter of my life, for the first time you will not be my number one focus. I want to thank you for the places we’ve gone together,” she wrote in her hockey retirement IG.
Since then Mikayla has done what Instagram professionals do — she’s been busy creating content. She’s been working out. She’s been promoting Manscaped. She’s kept the spray tan in pristine condition. Athletes need to know when it’s time to hang ’em up and move on in life. It just happens that Mikayla had a backup plan with Instagram. Take a guy like Tom Brady. He has no retirement plan. Football is all he knows. Sure, he could dicc around with that TB12 stuff he has going on, but let’s be real here, Tom Brady would be bored telling people to drink half their body weight in water.
The NCAA always tries to tell athletes to plan on going pro in something other than sports. Mikayla wasn’t a product of the NCAA, but she clearly seemed to get the message. Good for her. Next thing you know she might be at Dan Bilzerian’s place if this damn coronavirus would ever leave town.

Dear Hockey, It is time to say goodbye. It is time to turn the page and move to the next chapter of my life, for the first time you will not be my number one focus. I want to thank you for the places we’ve gone together. I also want to thank you for all the friends you have made me. My family sends their best as well. I know they will definitely miss seeing us together. I am excited for the future because everything you have taught me will allow me to succeed. There will still be early mornings, new adventures and new friends, and I hope that I embrace them with the same love and passion I did for you. Thanks again for everything.
