As far as tennis smokes go, Italy’s Camila Giorgi somehow flies under the radar. How? I have no idea. I suppose everyone is too hyperfocused on Genie Bouchard, Caroline Wozniacki, and Maria Sharapova to give her the time of day — but not here at BC. If you announce your presence at a major by dropping a heater, a blog is going up, no questions asked.
Camila, currently ranked No. 40, is a star and she’s attempting to start her US Open by knocking off two American players. She defeated Whitney Osuigwe in her first-round matchup on Monday, and she’s attempting to upset against No. 16 Venus Williams today. The two players have only met once before with Venus topping Camila in three sets at the 2015 Australian Open.
The 26-year-old out of Macerata recently had her best major performance at last month’s Wimbledon as she reached the quarterfinal. She pushed the GOAT, Serena Williams, to three sets but couldn’t pull off the shocker.
Camila’s best run at the US Open came back in 2013 when she reached the fourth round.
