Let’s take a look at a perfect example of how baseball can be an absolutely BRUTAL sport. There’s nothing else going on the sports world today, so we might as well. Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb was sitting on 2 outs in the 9th with 1 strike away from the 300th no-hitter in MLB history before his heart and guts got ripped out by a liner down the third base line.
134 pitches deep. One. strike. away. And this happened. Absolutely demoralizing.

The only way it could get more soul-crushing than that is if somebody bunted for a hit in that situation. But that would be just a total dickhead move and quick way to catch a heater to the ribs To make matters just a tad bit worse, the bullpen guy who came in immediately gave up a hit which drove in Newcomb’s baserunner, so he finished the day not only a strike away from a no-no, but also with an earned run added to his line.
In the grand scheme of things, this was obviously a great outing. 8 and 2/3, a hit, a run. But the fact that you were that close to something that you likely won’t ever get that close to again, absolutely blows.
Some highlights from the outing
