Over the past couple of months a number of former professional athletes have revealed that they are now in the marijuana game. Ricky Williams, Lamar Odom, Al Harrington — you know, the guys you’d pretty much expect to take advantage of marijuana’s legality.
We can add onto the list today with a somewhat random name: former NBA head coach Don Nelson. Yes, the mastermind behind “Nellie Ball,” the “We Believe” Warriors, and winner of 1,335 games revealed in a New York Times interview that he now lives happily in Hawaii and dabbles with the tree thanks to Willie Nelson:

Have you been into cannabis for long?
No, I didn’t smoke until maybe three or four years ago. I never smoked when I was coaching. I just started. Willie [Nelson] got me smoking.
He would do it.
He would do it. I didn’t think I’d ever be a pot smoker, but hanging out with Willie and Woody [Harrelson] and guys like that, you know, everybody smokes in those games. It just became kind of natural. Usually you’re smoking with your friends, sitting around, telling stories, you smoke a bowl. It’s not that I smoke all the time. I usually just smoke at night during poker games. Like Willie told me, it’s hard to be depressed when you’re smoking pot.

Somewhere Al Harrington is lighting up to this story of his former coach smoking weed with Willie Nelson and A-list actors. Oh, and he also grows his own stuff called “Nellie Kush” (though he says he doesn’t deal, of course):

Oh, it’s great. Great stuff. It’s called Nellie Kush. It’s O.G. and Hindu Kush. Hindu Kush is really good. It comes from India and the guy that brought it over mixed the two of them, so we’ve got Nellie Kush now.
