You may have missed the Ohio State – Bemidji State women’s hockey game at Columbus on Friday night. Just a hunch.
Well, check the video above, because after the Beavers wrapped up their 3-2 win, all hell broke loose in a post-game brawl that resulted in 18 fighting majors, which include a game disqualification, and 287 penalty minutes.
Coupled with the 16 combined penalty minutes in regulation, the teams set an NCAA record with 303 total penalty minutes, breaking the Division I women’s mark of 83 set by Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth — and the overall record of 268 by the Boston University and Maine men in 2004.
Buckeyes coach Nate Handrahan channeled Reg Dunlop in his post-game comments:
“We’re happy to at least see our girls show some fight and some spirit.”
The kicker: the teams had to play again on Saturday with just 10 players on each side. Bemidji won in a shootout (no actual guns were involved).
