Zack Greinke is all that stands between the St. Louis Cardinals and the World Series. Greinke will start Game 5 of the NLCS in Los Angeles this afternoon (4 p.m. ET on TBS). If he doesn’t shut down the Cardinals, the Dodgers are done for the winter.
Most baseball fans are familiar with Greinke’s backstory: he dealt with social anxiety disorder early in his career, but he has kept it in check through medication, treatment and the support of his knockout wife, Emily.
Emily Greinke, the former Emily Kuchar, was Miss Daytona Beach USA 2008 and a Dallas Cowboys‘ cheerleader. The two met at Apopka High School in Florida, which is really amazing. Imagine having a Cy Young winner and a Dallas Cowboys‘ cheerleader from your high school?
It also means Kuchar knew Greinke before he signed his 6-year $159 million deal with the Dodgers this past off-season. Always nice to see love happen for better reasons than money.
Greinke has 159 million reasons to pitch well today, but last time he pitched a Game 5 against the Cardinals in the NLCS – it didn’t go well for him.
