Thanks to Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Dempster and ‘Smokin’ Joe Girardi, Major League Baseball stole the sports spotlight back last night with the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

After missing with several pitches earlier in the at-bat, Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster plunked A-Rod on the elbow in the second inning. Despite the intentional beaning, Dempster didn’t get ejected… but Yanks manager Joe Girardi did when he exploded, nearly hitting an ump, after Dempster was allowed to stay in the game (only to give up a solo home run to Rodriguez in the sixth inning).

Allowed to play only because of a pending appeal on his historic suspension for PEDs, A-Rod took on the role of Chief Troll. Rodriguez Cadillac’d the HR trot and mimicked David Ortiz’s celebration at home plate. The homer started a four-run inning that helped the Yankees win, 9-6.

Obviously, the situation caught mad heat on Twitter, which is something that doesn’t happen often during a regular season MLB game:
