Nothing says “I’m an NFL fan” like buying a decade-plus old barrel that had a guy’s balls inside it for four-plus hours each Sunday. Broncos fans can now own a genuine game-worn barrel from the late Tim McKernan, better known as “Barrel Man.” The Denver Post reports one of McKernan’s bright orange barrels is being auctioned on eBay. The bidding is up to $2,026 as of 8:30 a.m. (ET) on Saturday. Only an empty Coors can once held by John Elway or a Bible clutched by Tim Tebow would fetch more in Denver.
Before his passing in 2009, McKernan attended Broncos’ home games wearing just the barrel (with suspenders), a cowboy hat and boots. He was inducted into the Hall of Fans at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999. His widow, Becky McKernan, has included a letter of authenticity stating the barrel is one of three in existence. That’s a pretty solid wardrobe rotation for an article worn just eight times a season.
