Josh Hamilton knew he’d get booed upon returning to Arlington, Tex. after he left the Texas Rangers by signing a five-year, $125 million deal with the Los Angeles of Anaheim in December. Many Rangers’ fans were still angry at Hamilton for fading down the stretch in 2012 while he weaned himself off chewing tobacco. The A’s passed the Rangers for the American League West crown, and Texas then dropped the wild card game to Baltimore. Of course, leaving the team for a division rival wasn’t enough for Hamilton, because in February he compounded his offense by saying the Dallas/Fort Worth region was “not a baseball town.”
On Friday, Rangers fans got some revenge as Hamilton went 0-for-4 and struck out twice. The Texas fans booed Hamilton relentlessly. Hamilton noticed and told reporters the commotion was indeed something he’d never heard before in the Ballpark at Arlington:
“Honestly, man, that was louder than any playoff game I’ve ever been to. So I’m excited for them about that. Hopefully the fans can carry that on through the season for them.”
The devout Hamilton also mentioned that an Angels’ player said, uh, Jesus could never go home again either:
“He said, ‘Where was Jesus got-after the most?’” Hamilton recalled. “He said, ‘His hometown.’ Obviously, baseball-wise, this was my hometown.”
Josh, Josh, Josh… trolling a fan base and comparing yourself to Jesus isn’t a good option, bro.
