Sonnen-Silva is finally here. UFC 148 is Saturday night in Las Vegas and Dana White needs a huge night for the sport. Recent fight cards haven’t even come close to the street cred of what UFC 148 will have on pay-per-view. You also get Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz. And Cung Le vs. Patrick Coté. If Sonnen and his taunts can’t get you to purchase UFC 148, you aren’t a MMA fan at all. Hate him all you want, he’s the best thing going for Dana’s company.
“People call this one of the biggest fights of the year,” Sonnen says. “You better check your numbers, guys. This is the biggest fight of all time.”
Of course that’s ridiculous.
However, this might be one of the most important fights of the last five years for the UFC. A Sonnen victory launches this rivalry to a new level and would make for a huge 18 month run for the sport with Silva obviously wanting his middleweight belt back.
A Sonnen loss and Dana has to figure out where to go next to drum up excitement from the UFC base. Jon Bones Jones can only fight so many times in a year.
*Yes, Arianny Celeste will be working the ring cards this weekend. Reason #2 to buy the PPV.
