Labor Day Bowls:
Anyone notice how ESPN has now turned the opening weekend of college football into another weekend of “bowl” games? Ole Miss was so excited to win the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic — or whatever they’re calling that game — two players dumped a bucket of water on Hugh Freeze’s head. Was that win over Boise really worth dumping water on your coach? It is if ESPN makes it seem like you’re playing in a bowl game in August.
Thank you to college football for selling your soul to Jerry Jones (and ESPN) and that great shrine to the college game. You know what used to be exciting? Watching Florida State actually play a decent out-of-conference opponent in Tallahassee. Those were the days. Yes, Notre Dame will travel to Tallahassee in October, but there will come a day when all these big OOC games are played on a neutral field so ESPN can let a sponsor run wild. As for the Seminoles schedule, they only play four actual road games (NC State, Syracuse, Louisville and Miami).
