The Tennessee Titans released running back Chris Johnson on Friday afternoon. It marked the second consecutive week an NFL team cut loose a Pro Bowl level skill position player after the Eagles released DeSean Jackson last week.

Johnson’s 7,965 career rushing yards ranked third on the franchise’s all-time leader board behind Eddie George and Earl Campbell. His biggest shortcoming was his inability to duplicate his 2009 season, when he ran for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns, leading to his nickname of CJ2K.

After holding out in 2011, Johnson signed a four-year, $54 million contract. By cutting him now, Tennessee saved $4 million.

Twitter was all over the news: Titans fans seemed glad, while other teams were quick to hope their squad landed the speedy back.
