More than three decades since his final fight, Muhammad Ali remains one of the world’s most recognizable athletes. During the 1960s and ’70s, the heavyweight champion was indeed “the greatest.”
You know Ali wasn’t cruising around in an AMC Gremlin in those days, right?
He rode in this 1959 Mercedes-Benz Golden Angel Wing instead. One of many rides formerly owned by Ali, the golden Benz is on display at a Manteca, Calif. car dealership before it heads to auction.
The car was recently valued at $1.5 million by dealership owner Phil Waterford for an episode of Pawn Stars. Initial auction bids have come in as high as $500,000.
Waterford told a local news outlet that the proceeds will be used to fight against world hunger as per the wishes of Ali and the car’s current owner:
“He personally got on the phone and said these words ‘proceeds to benefit mankind,’ ” Waterford said of Ali.
