Phils’ Minor Leaguer Giving Away Sweet ’91 Jaguar With Car Phone & Cassette Deck
We’ll bet that this 1991 Jaguar smells like dip, baseball gloves and old money. The Reading Fightin’ Phils, the Phillies Double-A affiliate, are raffling off the 1991 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign of first baseman Jim Murphy during the team’s final nine-game homestand starting Thursday.
Murphy (pictured above) decided to donate the ride instead of trying to drive it back home to Washington state. (At least he didn’t park it in downtown Reading at night. Damn thing would already be gone.)
Among the features included in Murphy’s Jaguar:
• car phone
• cassette player
• big, honkin’ chrome hood ornament
• beige leather seats
Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Proceeds benefit the Baseballtown Charities, which helps underprivileged youth play baseball. The winning ticket will be drawn on Aug. 29 at Reading’s First Energy Stadium.
The Phillies’ minor league affiliates are just crushing the promotions game lately. Reading’s giveaway of Murphy’s car comes on the heels of the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs funeral giveaway on Tuesday. No wonder the big league team has an attendance lag this season.
All kidding aside, Reading is one of THE best minor league baseball experiences. Great park, access and in-game promotions.
