AJ McCarron: ‘I Grew Up A Poor Kid In Mobile’

While we’re constantly reminded that Johnny Manziel’s parents are rich and can afford the finer things in life, AJ McCarron shocked us today at SEC Media Days.

A reporter asked McCarron what drives him. As you can watch in the video, he replies that he wants his family to have things they’ve never had and says that he’s just a poor kid from Mobile, Alabama.

That immediately piqued my interest since it’s widely known that McCarron went to St. Pauls Episcopal School where tuition is $10,512 a year. Maybe he was on scholarship there.

We can’t find much about McCarron growing up poor; AJ’s father, Tony, is a Mobile firefighter. It was reported in 2012 that Tony has a “modest” two-bedroom house.

My 2 daughters grew up as I did. We weren’t poor by any means, but they didn’t have all the luxury that some of their friends had. We were / are a modest middle income family. One person’s definition of poor doesn’t necessarily match another’s.
