Just when things were going incredibly well for the patchwork 2013 New York Yankees, along comes ‘Shushgate.’ As
reported by the New York Daily News just after midnight on Sunday, Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain, already not a fan favorite in the Bronx, snapped at legendary Yanks’ closer Mariano Rivera in view of reporters before the team’s game at Kansas City on Saturday.

A Nebraska native, Chamberlain had friends and family, including his son, in the Yankee dugout (you can see them in the picture above). As Joba greeted the crowd, the volume of the conversation got loud enough so that Rivera asked Chamberlain to ‘Shhh.’ Joba then got all “Enter The Dragon” on Mariano Effing Rivera. ZOMG!

“Don’t ever shush me again,” Chamberlain told Rivera in full view of reporters and fans.

“You do this every day,” Chamberlain said, referring to Rivera’s meeting with the media. “I don’t get to see my family every day.”

If you know anything about Yankees fans, you know exactly how they reacted to this on Twitter. Other than Derek Jeter, no one is as sacred to fans of the Bronx Bombers as Mariano Rivera. This is what we mean:

If one of the team’s other stars had said something to Rivera, Yankees fans would have killed the guy, but for Chamberlain, who has long been perceived as an oft-injured, failed prospect who never realized his potential, this could be the death knell for him.
