Make no mistake: post-season hockey is different. When Ottawa Senators defenseman Eric Gryba leveled Lars Eller of the Canadiens in the second period of Thursday night’s Game 1 of the teams’ playoff matchup in Montreal, Habs fans flew into a rage on Twitter. While the bulk of Eller’s bloody injuries seemed to have come as a result of his hitting the ice face first, Gryba’s hit was the catalyst.

After being pulled from a pool of his own blood, Eller was taken off the ice on a stretcher. He was kept at a hospital overnight with a concussion, facial fractures and missing teeth. Eller was released Friday morning.

Gryba was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for what some felt was a clean hit. Brendan Shanahan and the NHL Department of Player Safety asked that Gryba be available for a phone hearing on Friday afternoon. A suspension could be imminent.

Canadiens’ winger Brandon Prust is hoping Gryba won’t be suspended so that hockey justice can be administered on ice. Prust also called Sens coach Paul MacLean “…a bug-eyed fat walrus” after MacLean suggested it was a clean hit. Game 2 ought to be something.

Watch the Gryba hit in the graphic video clip below and decide for yourself.

UPDATE: Gryba suspended for two games.
