FOX Sports Girl Of The Week: Kayla
Fox Sports Midwest Girl Kayla has a tough gig spending her summer at Busch Stadium, watching winning baseball, counting World Series flags while enjoying a pulled pork sandwich and garlic fries. Imagine getting to work with one of the most respected franchises in sports and making October plans in April. That’s Kayla’s problem.
The Cardinals are, of course, off to a fast start (8-5) and in first place in the N.L. Central, a year removed from taking the San Francisco Giants to seven games in the N.L.C.S.
Kayla, a former Mizzou student and Golden Girl dancer, is eager to tell you all about her love of St. Louis sports and summer baseball at Busch. If you’re a Cubs fan, this is about to get depressing.
Who is your favorite athlete?
Tara Lipinski. When I was younger I looked up to her and wanted to be a professional ice skater because of her. I even got to meet her when she performed at Andy Williams theater in Branson.
Who is your athlete or celebrity crush, and why?
My favorite guy celebs are Ryan Reynolds Josh Hartnett, Channing Tatum. Why? Tall, Dark and handsome. I also have a girl crush on Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lawrence.
What is your fondest sports memory?
In college, I was a Golden Girl dancer at the University of Missouri where we performed at all football and basketball games. My sophomore year Mizzou beat KU at Arrowhead Stadium and the next week we were ranked #1 in the nation. Pretty cool!
What sport would you play professionally if you could, and why?
Definitely football – it is my favorite sport and the one I know best. I grew up watching it with my dad and brother every Sunday. I also never missed a home Mizzou football game in my college career, there is nothing like it!
What’s the coolest assignment you’ve worked as a Fox Sports Girl?
Hands down the Germany trip “Spring Training to the Troops”. It was a once in a lifetime experience to visit the men and women serving our country. It was incredibly rewarding and something I will never forget.
I’ve never been to St. Louis or a Cardinals game at the new Busch Stadium, what should I make sure to see and do?
Make an Arch visit for sure. Also a tour at the Anheuser-Busch brewery with a visit to the Clydesdale stables. At Busch Stadium visit the Stan Musial statue. Inside there’s not a seat where you don’t have a good view of the game and the downtown skyline. Not to mention our food is outstanding! St. Louis is known for toasted ravioli, thin crust pizza and of course our BBQ! Top it all of with some Ted Drewes frozen custard and you’re set.
I’ve been dieting but would consider going nuts at a Cardinals game. What’s the best fattening choice at Busch: Regular hot dogs, kielbasa or the brats?
As much as I’m a brat fan, my favorite choice at Busch Stadium is the pulled pork sandwich and garlic fries. There’s only one stand that you can get it. The stand is behind home plate around section 150. They also have something new this season which is a macaroni and cheese stuffed burger that I can’t wait to try! They showed it to me for a segment we taped for Cardinals Live pre-game and it looked so good.
More annoying: Cubs fan or Reds fan and why?
Oh man, can I say both? I’d say Cubs fans because I’ve been to Wrigley Field and heard a little bit of the taunting you get when you wear Cardinals red. Not to mention how far this rivalry dates back and the history these two teams have. I think almost any Cards fan would say a Cubs fan is the worst.
Are Cardinals fans tired of winning the World Series and just looking for a couple years to chill with semi-exciting baseball?
We’re always looking for a World Series win! You can never have enough. Funny story I had to work when the Cards were in the 2011 World Series. So I snuck away and watched the game in the storage closet on a small tv. I saw David Freese’s historic home run, started screaming and my boss heard me… busted! World Series wins are something Cardinal Nation never has out of sight or gets tired of!
You have a Cardinals suite for a game and can invite team legends, who are you inviting?
How big is this suite? Stan the Man first and foremost. I’ve learned a lot more about him with everything that’s happened around his passing and he was a genuinely good guy to people and to baseball. He was liked by everybody. Among others would be Brock, Herzog & I think Ozzie Smith would be fun to hang out with too.
Of the recent players that I’ve watched I’d invite McGwire, Ankiel, Edmonds, Rolen, Pujols, Carpenter, Molina, Holliday Schumaker & Motte. Of course LaRussa would be there too and lets not forget David Freese and his Game 6 heroics, he would also get an invite.
Better play by play Buck: Joe or Jack Buck and why?
Well, Jack Buck is obviously a legend. But I’d have to pick Joe Buck who I’ve grown up listening to.
