Ben Howland Fired From UCLA? These 20 NSFW Tweets Hope So

By         Posted in   Basketball

Ben Howland will be fired as head men’s basketball coach by UCLA on Sunday — at least that’s what Yahoo! Sports reported in the middle of the Butler-Marquette and Gonzaga-Wichita State games on Saturday. After landing one of the nation’s best recruiting classes last year, Howland’s Bruins underachieved in 2012-13. Their listless performance in Friday night’s embarrassing 20-point defeat to Minnesota in the NCAA tournament was allegedly all that UCLA needed to be convinced that the beer-pong playing Howland had to go.

But, in the words of Lee Corso: not so fast. UCLA put out a statement early Sunday morning (East Coast) / late Saturday night (West Coast) that stated it had not fired Howland.

So, Howland is staying? Well, the release didn’t say that. Maybe there’s a problem with his buyout.

Brad Stevens of Butler, Shaka Smart of VCU and Tommy Amaker of Harvard were already rumored to be on the short list as possible replacements (not that those guys had a better last 48 hours than Howland). Whatever. Just don’t fire whoever is in charge of UCLA cheerleader recruitment.

Before, during and after the initial announcement of Howland’s firing came on Twitter, plenty of fans and pundits were ready to say good-bye (to the coach that took the school to three straight Final Fours from 2006 to 2008). You can read all their venomous tweets in the gallery below, but here’s the money shot:
