Fans love to see Spike Lee when he is rooting for their team. If not, well… The director/writer/Knicks fan showed up to see No. 25 VCU play its Atlantic 10 tournament games at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn this weekend. Lee claimed he was a big fan of Rams’ head coach Shaka Smart and the ‘havoc’ defense. He even gives Lee the double-back tap hug in the video below.

Of course, that didn’t matter to the UMass fans, who were irritated by cameras catching Lee rooting for VCU throughout Saturday’s semifinal, eventually won by the Rams. They took to Twitter to hammer away at the “Do The Right Thing” and “He Got Game” director, as you can read in the tweets in the gallery below.

Lee is in attendance Sunday for the championship against No. 16 Saint Louis. The midwestern fans of the Billikens aren’t being much kinder. Saint Louis leads 29-21 at the half.
