Until Juan Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious or Yadier Antidisestablishmentarianism are signed by an international team, Cuban shortstop Erisbel Arruebarruena and his 13-letter surname, which wraps around the back of his jersey like a horseshoe, will rule the international baseball world.

Arruebarruena and his countrymen took on Brazil Sunday morning in Japan during World Baseball Classic pool play. Those of us without lives watch competitive baseball regardless of the country/time/channel.

With 14 characters, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia of the Red Sox has an even longer surname than Arruebarruena. Saltalamacchia holds the MLB record for longest surname, but Boston Class-A prospect Seth Schwindenhammer goes Saltalamacchia one better at 15 characters.

Maybe the Red Sox can figure out how they can sign Arruebarruena to a deal. If they can’t contend in the A.L. East, at least they can lead the league in uniform letters used.
