Rumors have always haunted Mike Piazza. The former major league star finally addresses some of them in “Long Shot,” a memoir due out soon. The New York Post has excerpts. Arguably the greatest offensive catcher in baseball history, Piazza still wasn’t a first ballot Hall of Fame choice in January — his first year of eligibility. Why? Persistent rumors that Piazza dabbled in performance enhancing drugs during his career, even though he was never directly linked to steroids.

In the memoir, Piazza admits to taking androstenedione, an over-the-counter supplement used by Mark McGwire and others, but never steroids.

“I was into power, not prison.”

Another persistent rumor: Piazza was gay, which he thinks was started by a vengeful ex-teammate or perhaps Mets manager Bobby Valentine. What say your book, Mike?

“If I was gay, I’d be gay all the way.”

Piazza goes on to explain that it wasn’t the connotation that he was gay, but that he was banging Playmates, hanging out with broads in nightclubs and leading a lifestyle to cover up his gayness. “I found it hugely insulting that people believed I’d go so far out of my way — living with Playmates, vacationing with actresses, showing up at nightclubs — to act out a lifestyle that would amount to a charade,” he writes in the memoir.

Among other topics in ‘Long Shot':

Roger Clemens — Piazza fantasized about karate fighting Roger Clemens after The Rocket drilled him in the head, but when he had the chance at the World Series, he worried that the big Texan might kick his ass if he charged him.

Axl Rose — Piazza gave Axl Rose crap at a New York-area Guns N’ Roses show for performing while wearing Yankees, Knicks and Rangers jerseys, but not wearing a Mets jersey.

Debbie Dunning — Piazza got his ass kicked by actress Debbie Dunning, who played the ‘Tool Time’ girl on Home Improvement, after the couple broke up over Halloween.

We’ll see what else Piazza has to say inside the book, but these topics are all pretty awesome. If he’s trying to squash out that gay rumor once and for all, there should be pages of sex stories and an entire chapter called ‘Road Beef.’
