Vinny Testaverde Talks Turkey, Wild Turkey Bourbon & Thanksgiving Football With BC
When we got a shout from Wild Turkey about this event, we admit, we didn’t know what to expect. What was promised was that Jimmy Junior the turkey, Wild Turkey‘s poster boy, would get put in the turkey pen and pick the outcome of the three Thanksgiving day NFL games. The kicker? Vinny Testaverde was coaching up Jimmy Junior and was the host of the event. Bourbon, football and Vinny Testaverde? Sign us up!
Famed boxing announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. called the proceedings as Jimmy Junior hopped in the pen and picked the outcomes. Jimmy Junior’s picks? Detroit over Houston, Dallas over Washington and New England over New York. Vinny Testaverde showed some confidence in Jimmy Junior, saying this in the press release:
Jimmy Junior is the best, not to mention the only, football picking turkey I’ve ever worked with. After all my years in the sport, I have never seen anyone who demonstrates such an uncanny ability to see through the hype and focus on what team will really come out on top. I fully expect him to go three for three this Thanksgiving, giving turkeys everywhere something to gobble about.”
Here is the video footage of Jimmy Junior making his picks. Notice how anxious he was to pick Dallas…Jerry must’ve sent something extra his way.
We also received an opportunity to sit down with Vinny and talk turkey, football and more. Check out the full interview:
BC: What was it like producing the promo video with Jimmy Junior? Were there any hiccups along the way?
Vinny: Well, you know no real hiccups, but from a distance you see a turkey. No big deal, it’s just a turkey…and then all of sudden they say come sit over here next to the turkey. As you go sit down you realize this thing can peck my eye out at any second! I was a little nervous at first, but you start to feel a little comfortable around him with the handler there.
BC: Did you have three picks in mind before Jimmy Junior went in there and made his?
Vinny: Well, you know, my picks would’ve been Dallas, Houston and the Jets. The Jets are for obvious reasons…I’m a loyal Jets fan. It would be great to see him go 3-0 and I can be back here next year because of my great coaching.
BC: What was your favorite off-the-field memory from your playing days?
Vinny: I’m sure I have a bunch of them, but the thing about playing football, no matter how many years you play, it’s all about the relationships you make. For instance, my son just started playing high school football and my high school coach texted me just the other day, reminiscing about our days in high school. That’s what has the most meaning.
BC: How have you been spending your time now that your NFL career is over?
Vinny: I’ve been laying low, coaching a little high school football, playing some golf. I’ve got other interests and business opportunities too. I call it doing nothing, but keeping busy.
BC: You handled yourself pretty well in the videos for Wild Turkey. Do you have any plans for future work in TV?
Vinny: Well, this isn’t my thing. Occasionally I’ll come do something fun, at the same time promote and endorse somebody and make a couple bucks.
While Vinny didn’t give us any juicy off the field party stories from his days at Miami, he was a very nice guy. He even paused moments prior to our interview to sign an autograph for a guy passing by on the street outside. Check out Vinny’s promotional video for Wild Turkey below and as they said at the event, this Thanksgiving enjoy some Wild Turkey and “Give ‘Em The Bird!”
