This has to be the most disgusting ear injury we’ve ever seen. Actually, it’s probably one of the most disgusting injuries we’ve seen period.
Washington Capitals forward Matt Hendricks sustained this during practice. Yeah, it wasn’t even in a game. Teammate Alex Ovechkin fired a shot on goal before a game in Pittsburgh. The shot went high, hit the glass and caroomed out… right into the side of Hendricks’ head.
Apparently, it gained momentum after it hit the glass.
“It hit me and it was kind of surprising,” says Hendricks. “It felt like somebody came up and hit me in the head with a baseball bat. It stunned me. I realized I was bleeding and pain was setting in. I knew it wasn’t good. I was pretty upset. I was thinking of all the worst possible injuries I could have had and I was hoping that it wasn’t going to be that bad.”
Well, it was bad. It was as bad as it looks in the photo. Fortunately, Hendricks was able to get it stitched up right away and his ear now looks somewhat normal again… with the help of the Penguins plastic surgeon.
Hendricks was back on the ice less than 24 hours later.
